For the first time, this one-of-a-kind 300-year-old Queen Anne house opens its doors to guests. Spacious, colourful and light-filled, it sits on a leafy cobbled street just a 3-min walk from Stepney Green Underground Station. Once owned by a Viscount who died at the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and left it to the Boy Scouts, this elegant and characterful house has seen a lot of history. Now lived in by a couple of writers, it’s an easy, unprecious, artistic space, lovingly filled with books and pictures.
Leaving the bustle of the Mile End Road, you’ll find yourself on a quiet cobbled street looking out onto a charming little green. Unlock the historic Grade 2 listed iron gates and pass through a small but charmingly planted front garden – complete with Lutyens benches and wrought metal table – and up the steps through a strikingly solid front door.
A breathtakingly large hall/reception room – with sofa and TV on one side – has sweeping stairs leading upwards and a large, light-filled kitchen straight ahead. A generous downstairs cloakroom has toilet, characterful basin (salvaged from the Savoy Hotel), and room for plenty of coats. The kitchen has a stainless steel island with 5-ring induction cooker, a large fridge-freezer and a round pine kitchen table seating up to 8 people. Three vast shuttered windows overlook the quiet mews at the back. There are no less than two dumb waiters (no longer in use!) and a door which opens onto a small, charming balcony with seating – nice for a glass of wine while you wait for supper to cook.
Going up the wide wooden staircase you come onto a generous landing with master bedroom, bathroom and small laundry room off it, as well as the house’s stunning main drawing room which overlooks the Green – a very characterful and cosy entertaining space with its panelling, tall windows and comfortable furniture and art. The bedroom has a superking-sized bed and, looking onto the mews at the back, is exceptionally quiet and peaceful. The bathroom is unusually large and comfortably furnished with a claw footed iron bathtub and large walk-in shower, as well as toilet and basin. Going upstairs again, another generous landing gives onto two further double bedrooms, both with king-sized beds and both overlooking the mews, and a further small bathroom comprising toilet, basin and bath with electric shower.
Guests will have full access to most of the house, except for two rooms on the top floor which will be used for storage and will remain locked. The basement will not be available for use, though there is access in case of emergency/fire. Check-in is via a lockbox, so you can arrive at your convenience any time after the check-in time.
Despite the quiet of Stepney Green itself, this is a busy area with plenty nearby. A large Sainsbury’s supermarket is a 7-minute walk away at Whitechapel and there are two smaller supermarkets right by Stepney Green Tube.
The Roman Road, with its cafes and food shops, is roughly a 20-minute walk away, and you can walk to Brick Lane (25 mins) for a curry. Shoreditch and Spitalfields – arguably now the foodie capital of London! – are also walkable in about 30 minutes.
If you turn left out of the house and walk for around 5 minutes, you’ll come to the wonderful Stepney Green City Farm, with its farmers market on Saturdays and a café which is a great favourite with families.
The area has fantastic transport links. Both Whitechapel tube station (8 mins) and Stepney Green tube station (3 mins) are very close.
Shoreditch and Spitalfields are around a 10-minute bus ride away, with frequent buses from a stop just a minute from the house.
Meanwhile, the Elizabeth Line at Whitechapel gets you to the West End in around 15 minutes and also makes Heathrow Airport very accessible.
